Public Service

The Public Service Department is the first department of its nature introduced in a Clerk of Court's office in Louisiana. The staff of the department is well-trained and eager to assist the customer in obtaining information from the department's significant collection of data.

Marriage Licenses

Applications must be made in person by either party

Licenses are issued at the following locations:

  • Marriage Licenses obtained in East Baton Rouge Parish are valid only for ceremonies performed in Louisiana; however, applicants do not need to be Louisiana residents.

    A 24 hour waiting period between time of issuance of the Marriage License and the ceremony applies.  Marriage Licenses are valid for thirty (30) days from the date of issuance.

    Applicants must provide the following documents:


    US Citizens:

    1. Your Birth Certificate (Original or Certified Copy, Alternatively, if naturalized you must present Naturalization Certificate)

    2. Your Valid Driver's License/Passport (Government issued License w/ Photo, LA Wallet is not acceptable)


    Non-US Citizens:

    1. For non-US Citizens please bring in Original or Certified Copy of the Birth Certificate as well as a notarized translated copy if the original is not in English.

    2. Non-US Citizens must present valid Passport OR Visa as Photo Identification.

     If this is not your first marriage applicants must bring in a certified copy of either Divorce Decree or Death Certificate from their most recent marriage.

    After obtaining the License you MUST wait at least 24 hours, unless you obtain a waiver from a Justice of the Peace.

    Please arrive at least 60 minutes prior to closing in order to allow time for processing.

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age to obtain a marriage license without judicial consent. If either applicant is under 18 years of age (and there are not more than three years difference in age between the applicants), a court order is required in addition to the written concurrence of his/her father and mother, or the parent having his/her legal custody, or of the tutor of his/her person. The applicants are urged to seek the advice of an attorney, as a court hearing and judicial interview are required. If either applicant is under 18, the Clerk of Court cannot under any circumstance issue a marriage license if there are more than three years difference in age between the applicants. Per Louisiana law, persons under 16 years of age may not marry under any circumstances, effective August 1, 2019 per Act 401 of the 2019 Legislative Session.

  • Applicants for a covenant marriage must have completed premarital counseling.

Passports

The Clerk of Court's Office now offers the availability of passport photos at both our Downtown and Airline locations. This new service makes the Clerk's Office a one-stop source for your passport needs.

Payments may be made by cash or credit card for the Processing Fee or photograph costs, but the Passport Fee must be made by check or money order.
